"A Clearing in the Clouds," - our collaboration at the ACT Theatre windows in Seattle in the spring of 2011 is the starting point for this print project.  The diverse influences acting upon the local cultural ecology - Asian and Northwest Coast Indian art, jet-age Modernism and the NW mystics - have continued being our inspiration.  We designed the pattern called "Northwest chinoiserie" - oversized, invasive blackberries ramble about cloud-lofted space needles and cottages adorned with orca whales.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: a special project by Matthew Offenbacher and Yoko Ott

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: a special project by Matthew Offenbacher and Yoko Ott

Saya Moriyasu and Charles Tung

Assistant Professor, English and Women’s Studies, Seattle University

for the Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University

January – March, 2010

What makes an intellectual? What is the basis of property? What is the relationship between the life of the mind and the sensual world?

Curator Yoko Ott and artist Matthew Offenbacher teamed up to investigate the aesthetic power of objects and ideas in the lives of artists, curators, and university professors by carefully pairing thirteen artists with thirteen professional thinkers. The artists were asked to visit their assigned person’s workplace, engage them in conversation, and select several things to borrow for the duration of the exhibition. The objects brought back from these expeditions—tools, raw materials, décor, texts, and other (harder to classify) items—have been installed by the artists in a setting especially designed by Ott and Offenbacher. The resulting exhibition is a hands-on database: a non-hierarchical collection of objects available for reading, touching, and looking.

An immersive and transformative installation. Keying in on the concept of absurd optimism the gallery is an interactive space alive with; object, sound and projection. The idea of absurd optimism plays off the ideal of futurism we grew up with, melded with our own current artistic sensibilities. The altered space is a new world of our own creation, with architectural elements that invite the viewer to explore the space and the future that is now. The work is an exciting collaboration between the artists, ambitious in concept, design and realization. (SOIL press release)

A five person collaboration explore absurd optimism.  Saya Moriyasu primarily worked on the Geo cheer piece with Jenny Heishman.  Also shown is her tiny people (available via www.ggibsongallery.com)
